Sleak and amazing technology

"The D8i Alfine Disc is a commuter's dream. Great for quick trips of long commutes. I've taken this bike out on a 44 k ride across the Ohio river Green way from Louisville across the Big Four Bridge to Clarksville, Jeffersonville and New Albany. Lots of comments on the 'beauty' of the bike"

Aluminum dream

"I love my bicycle! It's exactly what I was looking for. I got it to mainly use as a commuter bike on the few days I go into the office. And for that it is awesome. Riding through traffic or enjoying the chillness of a residential street. It's silent and such a smooth ride. On the weekends I bring my 1 year old along for the ride. She sits on a rack mounted Thule seat and absolutely loves it. I was nervous going up my steep hill but with this 8speed going up hills is a breeze. I've only ever owned a fixed gear single speed before this so having the ability to adjust gears while I ride is a dream. Thanks for making the highest quality bike that has both a modern feel AND a touch of classic cool."

A joy to ride

"What can I say? This bike has reinvigorated my love for riding. I was looking for a comfortable bike that would fit me (I'm 6'7"), and this feels wonderful. I didn't even realize it came with an internal gear system (actually, didn't even know that existed - and I'm not alone), but the Alfine system itself seems worth the price of admission. I have been bike commuting 6 miles round trip just about every day since this beauty came into my life. The ride is fun and easy, and it's also fun to see all the heads turn to check out my shiny ride. Best bike purchase of my life. You won't regret it."

Fantastic bike

"Okay so this is the first bike I’ve ever owned. It’s fantastic. I use my bike for commuting and it’s perfect. I put it together myself (the in box instructions weren’t great but watching some YouTube tutorials about how to put together a bike helped) and it went pretty smoothly. I got the bike checked out by a local shop and they made a couple adjustments but other than that it was good to go. The gear shift is great, it was really easy to figure out. I added a rear rack and some lights and this bike is good to go! The customer service people were fantastic when I talked to that about a couple issues with my order. I love my bike, I named him Todd. I’ve had my bike for a week and I’ve gone about 20 miles just running errands. The only flaw is that I’m not in shape enough to bike everywhere yet and that’s a personal problem."

Hits most of the marks - but not all.

"First off - I am a cyclist. I have been riding competitively and for recreation for more than 45 years. I know bikes. I wanted a bike to ride recreationally and on errands and the D8i appeared to fit the bill. Some features I appreciate are the hydraulic brakes and the internal gear hub, and chromoly steel frame. I asked about how to tension the chain in a chat with PUBLIC and was told the chain stay was appropriately sized to tension the chain. When I got the bike, I was relieved to see it has an eccentric bottom bracket to adjust the chain tension. The person I chatted with does not know what he is selling. The bike rides very well. The brakes are top notch, the geared hub works smoothly. I have read that the hub can be broken if too much torque is applied on the pedals, so I watch out for that. The biggest issue I found was with the fenders. Three issues: 1 - the fender stays are not adjustable and can easily rub the tires. I bent the front ones and moved the rear ones to different mounting points. The fenders are now far off the tires. 2 - the fenders don't cover enough of the tires to provide adequate water protection. The front fender especially. 3 - the fenders rattle and clank over bumps, even with all the bolts tight. I have found this problem with other aluminum fenders, too. So, the fenders will be replaced with SKS Commuter 2 fenders. They have none of these problems. I have been using them on my gravel bike for 8 years - they work. Another observation is the cheap headset. I realize PUBLIC wants to hit a certain price point and have to cut corners somewhere, but I don't think a cheap headset is the best place to do that. The headset takes a beating on bikes with no suspension and I will eventually replace it. That's my feedback on the D8i. Overall, I think it's one of the best deals on the market for a commuter bike and overall, I really like the product. It will be a keeper."

Great commuter

"I love the D8i Disc as a commuter. Added a rear rack (and will probably add a Porteur rack). The disc brakes, internal gearing, and fenders are great for year-round riding around Boston. It's a real joy to ride."

This bike fits me perfectly.

"This bike fits me perfectly. I'm a commuter and this bike is ideal for rider field of vision as well as traffic visibility. It moves very well. It is very nimble and fast. It stops on a dime. Great disc brakes. Shifting is awesome. The internal hub is great for commuting. In traffic I don't always have space on a street for a derailleur to work. Especially if I am going uphill. I coast up to the light, stop and change to my starting gear, then take off when the light turns green..no problem. The titanium finish is beautiful and makes it more visible. Thanks Public."

An Instant Classic

"PUBLIC D8i Disc LTD is an instant classic. This bike combines the classic lines of years gone by with the most modern high quality components. Build quality is exceptionally good for a bike in this price range and it's a thing of beauty to look at. My bike was well packaged and shipped fast. Even if you don't choose the "Ready to Ride" assembly option, you will receive this bike with all cables already ran and mine came with both the disk brakes and rear hub gearing very close to perfectly adjusted. The wheels arrived with spokes as true as you could hope for and required no additional adjustments. I've owned and still own several bikes from several price ranges. With this bike, I feel like I got more than my money's worth. This is my first experience with the Shimano Alfine 8 speed internal hub gearing. It's a huge upgrade from standard cassette gearing. Shifting is very smooth and accurate. It's great to be able to shift at a full stop which is not possible with cassette gears. I will be changing the seat and adding a rear rack, lights and a bike computer but see no need to change anything else on this bike. There is nothing wrong with the standard seat and it compliments the great looks of this bike. I just personally prefer a larger seat with more cushion. I think most people would be happy with the seat it comes with. All things considered this bike easily earns a 5 star rating."
